Organizations often describe transformation as a journey, then manage it like a project. There is a beginning, a portfolio of initiatives, a governance structure and a date by which the transformation is expected to be complete.
The difficulty is that the environment does not stop changing when the programme closes.
The real outcome
A durable transformation should leave behind more than implemented technology and a new organization chart. It should improve the organization’s ability to sense change, make choices, coordinate action and learn from outcomes.
That is a capability, not a milestone.
Leaders can begin by asking a different set of questions:
- Are decisions becoming clearer and faster?
- Can teams connect their work to strategic intent?
- Are the same constraints repeatedly returning under different names?
- Is learning changing how the organization operates?
The answers tell us more about transformation than the percentage of a roadmap marked complete.
