Practices that work through personal relationships and informal knowledge can feel efficient while an organization is small. Growth changes the economics of that model.

Dependencies multiply. Decisions travel further. Context becomes unevenly distributed. The organization responds with more coordination, which can make the underlying problem harder to see.

Design for the decisions

An operating model should make important decisions easier to locate and understand. It should clarify where autonomy is valuable, where alignment is essential and how teams learn from the consequences of their choices.

Scaling is therefore not primarily about reproducing teams. It is about designing an environment in which more teams can make good, connected decisions without requiring the entire organization to be in the same conversation.
